All About You

The Saint Louis University School of Social Work in St. Louis, Missouri invites applications for 1 tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position. This is full-time, 9-month tenure-line appointment beginning August 2024. Saint Louis University is a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care, and service. The School of Social Work is noted for its commitment to students, strong practice orientation, exemplary scholarship, and vision of social justice. Currently, the school offers a PhD in Social Work with approximately 20-24 doctoral students, Master of Social Work with approximately 150 students, a Baccalaureate of Social Work with over 100 students, a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of Arts degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice, and a graduate program in Applied Behavior Analysis.

School of Social Work faculty are highly productive scholars who produce impactful and interprofessional research. Our faculty are committed to and have a strong record of excellence in teaching, community-based service and research partnerships. We have received external funding from the National Institutes of Health, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, private foundations, and state and local partnerships. SLU also offers multiple internal funding opportunities to assist faculty with gathering pilot data to pursue additional external funding.

Our faculty’s current areas of scholarship and practice experience include:

  • health and wellness – hospice and palliative care; health disparities; disability and health; environmental health; health care decision making; non-pharmacologic interventions for older adults; loneliness and social isolation; financial capability; asset building and social development
  • mental health and substance abuse – community mental health; trauma; epidemiology of drug use; substance abuse treatment; co-occurring disorders, suicide prevention, trauma informed practice
  • families and youth – family therapy; family caregiving; at-risk youth; immigrants; intimate partner and interpersonal violence; child abuse & neglect; food insecurity; applications of behavioral analysis
  • criminal justice – policing; juvenile delinquency; mass criminalization; criminal justice outcomes; crime and violence; incarcerated and post-incarcerated families
  • social work research, education and training, policy, & practice – evidence-based practice, translational science; geriatric workforce; research synthesis and meta-analysis; implementation science; decolonizing/indigenizing social work curriculum; social policy; interprofessional education

Opportunities for collaborative research exist within Centers, Institutes, and Offices in the School and across the University, including the Doerr Center for Social Justice Education and Research; Research centers in Biosecurity, Global Health and Well-being, and Maternal and Child Health; Health Criminology Research Consortium; and training centers. Additional opportunities for collaborative research across the University include The Gateway Gerontology Education Center; AHEAD Institute; and Institute for Healing Justice and Equity. 

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must possess an MSW from a CSWE-accredited school and a PhD in social work or closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates who have two years post-masters experience. Candidates with a range of substantive areas and expertise are invited to apply. We encourage applicants to apply whose research and teaching demonstrate a commitment to social justice approaches to equity for historically excluded communities. Candidates must demonstrate an established or emergent program of research that will lead to an outstanding and sustained record of scholarship and potential for securing external funding.

Responsibilities Include

  • Maintain a productive agenda of meaningful empirical research evidenced through peer-reviewed publications, public impact and engaged scholarship, and actively pursue external research funding opportunities.
  • Teach across programs and curriculum with preference for ability to teach courses in the clinical concentration, contribute to the ongoing development and assessment of the curriculum, and participate in the accreditation process. The position requires a flexible teaching schedule to include day and evening classes as well as the ability to teach in a variety of formats (e.g., face-to-face, hybrid, and online).
  • Actively recruit and mentor students; support strategic initiatives across the School and campus; and provide leadership and service to the school and University and at the local, state, and national levels.

Salary

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with rank and experience.
