JOB SUMMARY
The Geospatial Software Engineer works with a team of data/imagery scientists and computing engineers to design and implement solutions for geospatial big data that leverages open-source programming tools, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) to deliver data curation and analytics services for the Remote Sensing Lab. This position is involved with processing petabytes or even exabytes of data daily. This position also works on diverse projects that require implementing complex solutions with a focus on collecting, parsing, managing, analyzing, and making available large sets of location-aware data (drone and satellite imagery, health data records, plant phenotypic data, and social media data) to turn it into meaningful information.
This position is funded by external grants with an initial appointment for a year that can be renewed for multiple years depending on satisfactory progress and funding availability.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Develops image processing back-end code to support AL/ML and/or analysis software in a production environment to deliver imagery products
Designs and implements AI/ML, statistical, or physics-based algorithms to provide quality data analytics service
Creates scaling algorithms with cloud computing with scalable application programming interfaces (API) and associative architecture to support big data analytics
Works with the team and customers in the design and execution of custom software packages including APIs and mobile apps
Works collaboratively with the data analytics team, and carry out tasks such as field data collection, calibration, postprocessing, and analysis
Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to build the backend code to support these algorithms in production environment
Ability to design and implement machine learning algorithms for regression, detection/classification/segmentation problems with feature-based deep learning and end-to-end mapping/modeling with convolutional neural network
Knowledge of online platforms such as Jupiter, Github, and/or Google COLAB
Advanced knowledge of cloud computing and GPU computing
Ability to write production code in Python, Java, Java Script and scaling the code with cloud computing resources, e.g. AWS
Verbal and written communication skills, including presentations
Strong interpersonal skills including teamwork and collaboration
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in computer science, electronic/computer engineering, geospatial science or geoinformatics
Three (3) years of experience in working with online platforms such as Jupiter, Github, and/or Google COLAB
Experience in cloud computing and GPU computing
Experience in machine learning and statistics
Experience in writing production code in Python, Java, Java Script and scaling the code with cloud computing resources (e.g., AWS)
Experience in developing software, API and apps for mobile devices
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in computer science, electronic/computer engineering, geospatial science or geoinformatics
Experience in geospatial data (imagery, location aware social or health data records)
Experience in developing big data solutions for geospatial analysis with cloud computing and GPU applications
