All About You
The Assistant Director for Accessibility and Wellness for the School of Law will primarily provide support services and programs for students with disabilities and assist in the development and implementation of wellness programming targeted to law students, faculty and staff.
Reporting directly to the School of Law Assistant Dean of Students, the Assistant Director’s responsibilities include:
Manage a student caseload, including: consultation with individual prospective and current students to assess eligibility for academic accommodations, review disability-related documentation, make determination of reasonable accommodations, and implementation of reasonable accommodations.
Formulation and management of accommodation plans for individual students, which may include hiring note takers, accessing alternative format textbooks and other academic material, coordinating with faculty and staff to provide needed accommodations for classroom needs.
Co-supervise and implement exam administration process for students with disabilities including students seeking academic accommodations for temporary conditions.
Assist students with accommodation requests on professional examinations including the MPRE and state licensing exams.
Research, evaluate, and stay informed of accessibility and wellness best practices for law students and the initiatives of other law schools, legal and other entities, and bar organizations, including participation and membership in relevant professional organizations
Create and implement a range of programs for students to promote resilience, professionalism and overall wellness, including programming focused on the intersection of well-being and various forms of diversity.
Direct involvement with, advising and supervision of students and student organizations conducting wellness activities and programming and coordinates with the University Counseling Center, other University departments and committees, bar associations, and other organizations to provide necessary services for the School of Law.
Assist the Student Services Office with other administrative tasks to maintain the productivity of the office, as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have:
A bachelor's degree (required), plus a master’s and/or doctoral degree in a related field including rehabilitation counseling, special education, counselor education, community counseling, human services, social work, psychological counseling, higher education management, or law.
2+ years’ experience working with people with disabilities (relevant work experience may substitute for direct disability services experience and/or relevant professional degree(s)).
Familiarity with strategies for assisting students with disabilities and facilitating accommodations in complex environments, particularly in law or other professional school settings.
Familiarity with the application of Section 504 and the ADA in the higher education setting, and ability to recognize and understand regulatory requirements associated with disability and accommodation issues.
Familiarity with accommodations related to law or other professional licensing organizations and examinations.
The ability to interpret medical, psychological, neuropsychological and educational documentation.
Familiarity with strategies and programming to support student wellness, ideally in a law or other professional school setting.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written and verbal communication skills with exceptional work ethic and a track record of personal initiative.
The ability to be part of a team in a collaborative working environment.
Excellent judgment and discretion, with the ability to manage highly confidential information.
The ability to provide advising, counseling, and mentoring to law students of diverse ages, backgrounds, experiences and personality types.
Demonstrable compassion, resilience and emotional intelligence.
